Health Care, Elder Care and End-of-Life Decisions
At The Mediation Group, we know that caring for an elderly parent or family member can accentuate complex family dynamics, especially when medical, quality-of-life, and end-of-life decisions are involved. Perhaps you and your siblings are trying to help figure out the best situation for a complicated health situation for a parent, perhaps you’re dealing with conflicts related to guardianship or conservatorship, or you or another family member is appointed as fiduciary. Maybe there are un- or under-resolved issues that could cause further harm to your relationships. Regardless, you deserve to create a flexible, non-judgmental plan and find a common solution.
Our team is here to help you through this process every step of the way. The first step is a phone call. After that initial conversation, one of our highly experienced mediators will reach out to learn more about you and your unique situation and guide you through our process. Once all parties agree to mediation, we can schedule the first session.
What to Expect
Handling disputes about providing care doesn’t have to be a time-consuming, expensive process involving the Probate and Family Court, or something that just festers in your family without resolution. Mediation provides a warm, compassionate environment to co-create a respectful path forward with personalized, realistic agreements that reflect your shared wishes, values, and vision for your future.
Our mediation sessions are conducted by two of our experienced mediators. You and all other parties would typically attend 1-3 sessions, each of which lasts two hours. If more family members are involved, we can discuss adding more sessions or lengthening the sessions.
Financial Considerations
Unlike the expensive, adversarial experience of litigation (which can last for months), our nurturing, personalized, and efficient services cost $650 / hour for each session for two mediators.
Divorce Mediation and Parenting Plans
TMG mediators help divorced parents negotiate their children's developmental changes or other issues, such as step-parenting, that occur in the years after divorce.
Post-Divorce Mediation
TMG mediators help divorced parents negotiate their children's developmental changes or other issues, such as step-parenting, that occur in the years after divorce.
Nontraditional Family Mediation
Mediation is particularly well suited for resolving conflicts arising from gay or lesbian family structures, an area in which the legal framework is often poorly defined.
Raising a Special Needs Child
The stress and conflict that is a normal part of all families is often exacerbated in families with high-needs children. The Mediation Group can support parents to develop skills in perspective taking, advocacy and communication.
Parent/Child Conflict Mediation
Mediation can provide support to both teen and parent and can model respectful communication, boundary setting and negotiation skills during this often difficult transitional stage.
Mediation for Adult Siblings
Disputes over estate division, or use of family homes, are common after the death of a parent. The Mediation Group can help prevent these disputes from causing irreparable divisions within an extended family.
Family Business Mediation
Tensions around navigating business decisions within the context of family dynamics can be very tricky, particularly when it comes to issues of succession. TMG's family mediators work with colleagues from both the legal and organizational practices to address the complex issues surrounding family business disputes, enabling families to work together productively through these challenges.
Retirement Mediation
This period in life requires a continuous process of emotional readjustment. TMG professionals can help the retiree and family members navigate this often difficult life transition.
